Inside Higher Ed Has Released the Results of Its 2017 Faculty Survey On Technology

Yesterday, Inside Higher Ed released the results of its 2017 faculty survey known as the Survey of Faculty Attitudes on Technology.  The survey was conducted with the assistance of Gallup and included 2,360 faculty members and 102 administrators from 2 and 4 year public, private, nonprofit and for-profit institutions.

Inside Higher Ed released the 2013 edition of its annual Survey of Faculty Attitudes on Technology.  As usual the survey is tilted heavily toward online/blended course technology (online classes, blended classes, and lecture capture) since that is where the growth in technology is highest.

Overview of the findings:

  • MOOCs (massively open online courses) are a hot topic and controversial.
  • Administrators are 3.5 times more likely to have higher expectations for the potential outcomes of online courses than are faculty.
  • Faculty were fairly evenly divided over their assessment of the effectiveness of online courses’ delivery of content necessary to meet expected learning outcomes.
  • Thirty-nine percent of faculty had taught a hybrid or blended learning class.
  • Thirty percent of faculty say they have not taught online because no one had ever asked them to teach online.
